Album Cover Analysis

Lostprophets-Liberation Transmission
This is the album cover from Lostprophets, Liberation Transmission. From the cover you can tell that the music genre is going to be rock but you cannot tell how heavy it is going to be. However the blood splatters on it would suggest that they would be heavy because of the stereotype that comes with it. The artist is Lostprophets and they are not on the front cover. The main focus of the cover is the eagle. The colour of the album is black and white. This makes the black stand out so your eye is drawn to the eagle even more. The blood splatters are red which draw you to them and makes you think about why they are there. I think the band is not on the front because there is six of them so I think it would be hard to get across their message. I think if it wasn’t for the blood splatters, then this album cover would be quite a clam one, but due to the blood splatters it causes a sense of discomfort. There is also some Latin words on the front which stands for “for us, for them, for you”. These are lyrics from a track of the album before this one. I think that this is aimed at people who are into indie but because of the blood it suggest heaver than first expected.

Eminem-The Eminem Show

This is the album cover from Eminem’s, The Eminem Show. From the cover you cannot really tell what type of music will be on the CD, however you know that he is a solo artist because there is one mic on a mic stand and no band present. The artist is Eminem and he is on the front cover sitting down in the centre of the stage and of the album so all the attention is drawn to him. The title of this album is The Eminem Show. This suggests that the track listings would be in the style of a show instead of individual tracks. The setting of this album cover is on a stage either before or after the ‘show’. You can tell this because there is a wooden floor like a stage and there is a red curtain. The pose that Eminem is in suggests that he is thinking about what he has done or about something that has happened. This shows that he is intellectual and doesn’t just rap about sex and girls but he has meaning in his lyrics. It is a pretty simple shot but suggests a mood of sadness because it looks like Eminem might be upset. I think the target market would be teenage males because that is normally the audience who most enjoy rap music.

Avenged sevenfold- City of Evil
This is the album cover from Avenged Sevenfold’s City of Evil. From the cover you can tell what music genre is on the CD. I think it is obvious because there is a Skelton on the front. Also the colours are quite dark which gives the image of the metal genre. The band is not on the front cover. However, on many other album covers they use a skull figure so it has become part of their brand so hardcore fans would know what band has made that album art. The title of the album is City of Evil. This suggests that the music will be evil which is connected with the heavy metal genre. It also suggest that they might talk about a horrible place in there lyrics of one of the songs. In the background of the cover there is a city that looks like it could be being sucked into a hole. This maybe because the city was so evil that the devil destroyed it. In the foreground is a skeleton with wings and a horse. This shows that they might be escaping the city being destroyed as they don’t want to die. He also has a sword so it could show that he is expecting a fight and because he is so evil people will try and destroy him. I think that this album cover would make some people feel scared because it is quite a dark cover and the skeleton looks like it is shouting. I think the typical fan would be a male teenager. This is because they are the people who are most into metal but it would also attract older generations that grew up with old classic heavy metal bands like mega death and iron maiden.
